Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The issue of abuse against aboriginal women and girls was one of the many topics discussed on Wednesday at the 2012 Council of the Federation Summer meeting.

There were two different strategies that were endorsed by the premiers and leaders of the national aboriginal organizations

One was a national strategy and the other a comprehensive education strategy.

The executive director of the Yellowknife YWCA, Lyda Fuller, said it's great to see them making these endorsements, and if they move forward with the strategies it will mean a lot.

"It sends a message that it's officially on their radar and that it's not acceptable to keep happening. And for the North, we've had lots of abuse against aboriginal women and girls and a lot of women murdered. I think this is a great time for them to be sending this message."

Fuller said a national strategy would be a huge benefit for the YWCA.

"Certainly a national strategy would help bring focused attention on this issue, and certainly any kind of public awareness campaign would be great."

At this point the strategies are only endorsements, and have not been made official.
