NWT cabinet expectations made public for first time ever

Tuesday, May 15, 2012 - 3:30 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - For the first time ever, the GNWT has made ministerial mandate letters public.

The letters to all cabinet members lay out what the ministers are expected to achieve during the 17th Legislative Assembly.

Premier Bob McLeod said he thought it would be helpful to make them public.

“Everyone would know about them and it would help us work harder to achieve these objectives,” he said. “I’ve heard very positive comments so far from the public about making these letters public.”

McLeod himself has mandates outlined for two of his portfolios: Minister of the Executive and Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations.

However, nothing is outlined for his role as Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, but he said the portfolio is a priority for the government.

“I’m working very closely with the Status of Women (Council),” he said. “I think that we’re looking to continue phase three of the (Family Violence Protection Act). We’re also looking at the gender equity provisions within the government.”

The mandates can be viewed on the GNWT's website.
