Future of HR Youth Centre uncertain with no lease agreement

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The future of the Hay River Youth Community Centre remains up in the air because its lease expired a number of years ago.

The chair of the youth centre believes the most effective option for the centre would be to leave it in its current location.

Glen Wallington said if there was a place where they could be equally as effective they would be willing to move, but after looking at six different options, nothing came close to their current location.

"So we're just going to fix things up and we're going to continue to operate until such time as the town comes to us and says 'okay, this is where we want you to move' or 'you have to move off', or 'you have to shut down', or whatever they end up deciding."

Wallington said the current location is effective because they are centered in the community and not in any one neighborhood.

"How effective are we going to be if we're moved somewhere else, if we just become a drop-in centre for an area of town? On the other hand, if you move us into the downtown core, are we going to end up with loitering and vandalism?"

Wallington said there is no other youth-specific facility in Hay River.
