NewsSome Vale Island residents want to raise chickens
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Some residents of Vale Island would like to be able to raise chickens on their property. The town's current bylaws don't allow livestock to be raised in the residential areas of the island but the Hub is considering amending its zoning and general plan bylaws and raising chickens is now up for discussion. Resident Kathleen Groenewegen has made three submissions to town council on the issue. She wants people to be able to apply on a case-by-case basis to raise the birds. "I've raised chickens in the past and I know as a child how much fun it is to be able to go out and get the eggs every day. It’s a great learning opportunity, it provides manure for your gardens and also local food," she said. Mayor Ken Latour said the bylaws do allow town council to grant exceptions to the ban on raising livestock. "What we are trying to do now for the short term is just figure out what's that process. Does someone just say hey I want chickens and council says yes? Probably that's not the right process. We do have to consider what the neighbors want," he said. Latour said council will discuss the issue again in June. CJCD Mix 100 News More Local
