Kiwanis Park first home for BMX park in Hay River

Friday, June 22, 2012 - 3:27 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The former mayor of Hay River was hoping for a permanent BMX Park in a permanent location but the current administration plans to explore all of its options.

The town already has some base pieces of equipment that had been set up in the curling club, but there was a lack of interest in that location.

So mayor Ken Latour said they're going to set up in a few locations, starting this year with Kiwanis Park.

“It may turn out that the Kiwanis Park is ideal site for that in the end, but we are also looking for a permanent place for that street equipment and next summer we might try it somewhere else in town.”
There has been support across town for the park, because it's a good way for kids to stay active without the need for coaches and volunteers.

Latour said there's room for expansion too.

“We have been working with the community group through our recreation staff and the rec board to identify some pieces of equipment that we can purchase and hopefully have in place for the summer, in order to start augmenting and developing the park further.”

Latour added he is hopeful council can decide on equipment purchases on Monday.
