One of two motions dropped from Northlands MOU

Wednesday, May 23, 2012 - 1:15 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The MOU between the city and Northlands Trailer Park is still intact, but one of the motions passed last week at city council won't be a part of it.

The motion dealing with the investigation of other funding avenues was removed after the city's legal department deemed it could not be included.

Northlands spokesperson Trevor Kasteel was on hand to clarify the motion's intent, but councilor Shelagh Montgomery said any other funding, such as the gas tax fund, has already been spoken for.

“Are you aware of the fact that we already have an infrastructure deficit in the order of 60 to 70 million dollars and we have no false illusions that the gas tax funding is even going to pay for the current public infrastructure gap that exists?" said Montgomery.

Kasteel said he does know, but he also said Northlands has been a good source of revenue for the city for a long time.

"We very well might have been able to pay for our own infrastructure with the amount of money that has been collected by the city over a certain amount of years," Kasteel said.

Both sides are still hoping to get the MOU signed, which could happen sometime next week.
