YK1 bans dogs on all playgrounds and schoolyards

Thursday, May 31, 2012 - 4:12 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - People haven't been cleaning up after their dogs on certain fields so now, Yellowknife Education District Number 1 is saying no dogs allowed.

The board started putting up signs to that effect at all of their schools and playgrounds last week.

The board's supervisor of facilities and maintenance, Elvis Beaudoin, said having dogs in school yards was creating a very unhealthy situation.

"I went to all the playgrounds and the fields and saw there lots of dog feces all over the playgrounds, and the kids were tramping through this stuff and bringing it into our schools and it was a very unhealthy situation. So I was asked, and I decided too, to put up no dogs allowed."

Beaudoin said some dog walkers have responded to the change.

"I think some of our maintenance crew that was out around had some people saying that they walk their dogs through there every day and they pick up behind their dogs and everything. But it's the people that don't that are the problem, right?"

YK1 is following in the footsteps of Yellowknife Catholic Schools, who Beaudoin said successfully banned dogs some time ago.
