YWCA pulls out YK Homlessness Coalition, cites lack of effort

Tuesday, July 3, 2012 - 4:46 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - YWCA Yellowknife has decided to pull out of the Yellowknife Homelessness Coalition and its work on the BETTY House project.

At issue is the perceived lack of effort when it comes to fundraising, but the coalition was quick to disagree with the YWCA's assertion that the funds which have been raised to this point have been "of no consequence".

The coalition's co-chair, Pastor Kirk Tastad, said the main point of the YWCA's frustration was the speed at which the project is going, but disagreements are always bound to happen when several groups sit at the same table.

"Any time you come together as a coalition of a bunch of service providers, and faith community, and concerned citizens, and different levels of government, there's a lot of people in the room to collaborate with, and sometime things don't move quite as fast."

Tastad said when it comes to the building itself, it's still on schedule to begin on time.

"Our goal is still the spring of 2013 to put the shovel in the ground and hopefully it'll be up and running the next year after that."

The YWCA said it will not comment on the coalition's press release sent out last Friday.
