Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Monday was Nunavut Day and while most of the major celebrations were in the major centres of our eastern neighbours, Yellowknife joined in courtesy of Nunasi Corporation.

The Inuit-owned group hosted a barbecue at the Larga Kitikmeot boarding home and also handed out goodies for people of all ages.

Event co-organizer Angela Atagootak said the turnout was good, but maybe not as good as last year.

"We're not quite sure why. We had it advertised. It was in the newspaper and it was also on CJCD. But overall it was a great turnout."

She also said having Nunavut Day celebrations in Yellowknife is important because a lot of Inuit people call the city home and that has to be recognized.

"Us Nunavummiut, we want to celebrate as well along with people who are in Nunavut. We are proud of Nunavut even though we live in Yellowknife."

She added planning for the day took a couple of months and included help from all of the corporation's companies.

Nunavut is now 13 years old, and is still the youngest jurisdiction in the country.
