NewsHay River resident returns from exchange in British ColumbiaTuesday, August 14, 2012 - 6:09 PM Yellowknife, N.W.T. - A young man from Hay River has returned home following a trip to British Columbia this summer. Cole Loutit was part of the Northern Youth Abroad program and his assignment was to live in the community of Vanderhoof for six weeks for both volunteer work and educational credit. Loutit said it was a fun time for him, even if it involved doing things for school. "There might have been a few challenges I had to face like getting a few assignments done, but other than that everything wall all worth it in the end." The program is geared towards Northern aboriginal youth in isolated communities, to help them earn skills to enter the world. Loutit said part of his job was to also find out about the community and help out in some way. "We go there to like learn about places we have never been to before in Canada, and we also have to work while we are at it, so I worked at the Community Museum there and I did that with another participant." In terms of his school credit, he admitted he's not sure where he will get the credit just yet. If Loutit applies and is accepted next year, he would be part of the international exchange, which is in Africa, but he's still undecided on that yet.
