Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Joe Handley has himself a new job.

The former premier has been named as the new public administrator for the Stanton Territorial Health Authority, effective as of Dec. 1.

Handley said he found out about his new gig from health and social services minister Tom Beaulieu in November and he's looking forward to the challenge.

“I’ve been through the hospital, I’ve seen a lot of very dedicated people working very hard in sometimes very hard, trying conditions,” he said. “We’ve got a good team out there and I look forward to meeting the other board chairs and public administrators and map our way forward.”

Handley doesn't have any specific duties yet, but he has had discussions with Beaulieu on what needs to be done and he said working on capital planning is a big issue.

“On the expansion and renovations, there is some planning work being done right now and he and I will be talking about some options we can look at,” he said.

Handley will assume the responsibilities of a governing body in terms of operations and finances for the authority, but he wants to let people know he's not becoming the new CEO of the hospital and his job is strictly part-time.
