Wedding Show cancelled this year due to lack of location

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The lack of a suitable facility in Yellowknife is being cited as the reason for the cancellation of the 2012 Wedding Show.

It debuted last year at the Champagne Room and was a success, but this year organizers felt a larger facility was needed.

The Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce took over the reigns from Dining on 50th and their executive director, Tim Doyle, said they tried to phone around for a spot this year with no success.

“We were going to host it at the (Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre), but that caught fire,” he said. “Some of the other locations in town are very proprietary, so they don’t allow outside vendors on their property when you’re hosting trade shows if their competing with the services they provide.”

Doyle says this is just a symptom of a larger problem in Yellowknife and he said something needs to be done.

“It would be nice if the GNWT started looking at a solution for hosting conferences and events here,” he said. “We really need a convention; we don’t have one. It’s getting harder and harder to host events in the city due to a lack of reasonable space.”

Even though the show has been cancelled this year, plans are already in place to stage it in 2013.
