City awards communication upgrade to NZ company

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The City of Yellowknife is officially going with Tait Communications for its communications infrastructure upgrade, but not everyone is happy about it.
Tait is headquartered in New Zealand, with branch offices in Houston, Texas, and Toronto, Ontario and that doesn't sit well with councillor David Wind.
He said the city should be looking inwards instead of south.
“Where the city’s needs exceed what is currently available locally working with local suppliers to boost capacity is a stronger strategy than relying on suppliers from southern Canada and abroad,” he said.
Councillor Mark Heyck said the city sent out a request for proposals at the end of the summer and only two came back.
“One proposal was missing information and that disqualified it from the process,” he said. “City administration, in partnership with our consultants, determined that Tait Communications had the expertise and the know-how to get this project done.”
The upgrade will include radio equipment and mobile data within emergency sectors of the city.
