NWT Literacy Council marks Family Literacy Day

Friday, January 27, 2012 - 2:05 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. – Jan. 27th is Family Literacy Day across the NWT and the NWT Literacy Council is getting in on the fun. According to the council's community literacy coordinator, Kathryn Barry-Paddock, it's a good chance for both parents and kids to improve their literacy.

“Lots of studies have shown that it really does help to improve an adult’s literacy when they are working with their children so it could just be simple things like reading a children’s book. If you have someone that may have a lower literacy level, they are going to be able to gain confidence and learn from helping out their children.”

Barry Paddock emphasized that learning as a family doesn't have to revolve around books or school and could include such topics as cooking.
“Possibly you’re counting how many cups of flour are going into a recipe and then maybe you can count how many times you’re going to stir it.

So there are lots of different ways that we can take everyday activities and turn them into learning.”

The council will be marking the celebration tomorrow with a public event at Northern United Place beginning at 2 p.m.
