Yellowknife to get new telecommunications provider

Monday, February 13, 2012 - 7:19 AM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Telecommunications provider Telus is coming to Yellowknife. Last week the company expanded their 4G network to the region.

Telus Spokesperson Chris Gerritsen explained the next step,"That's to bring that full Telus service to Yellowknife residents within the coming months."

Ice Wireless President Tom Zubko said there are pros and cons when it comes to new competition.

"They'll be competing with us on one hand and on the other hand the whole competition area is going to put downward pressure on the cost of doing business generally for not only ourselves but everybody else and that has got to be a good thing."

Zubko adds that more competition will likely also mean lower prices for consumers. Gerrisen says he cannot speculate on what prices will be but did say he expects Telus plans in the NWT will be priced comparably to rates in the south.
