Rash of snowmobile thefts reported in Yellowknife

Tuesday, April 10, 2012 - 12:48 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The warmer temperatures outside over the past few weeks have meant more people are out on their snowmobiles, but it also means something else as well.

A rash of sled thefts has hit Yellowknife in recent weeks with eight in total being reported.

All but one have of the sleds have been returned to their rightful owners.

Constable Kathy Law with the community policing unit said there are some ways to make sure you don't become a victim, such as making sure your sled is locked up.

"Purchasing track locks for your snowmobiles or making them in operable by removing spark plugs or belts. We also recommend that even if your snow mobile is in a locked enclosure like in a fenced in area to ensure that it is locked up like with a track lock or something as well," said Law.

Law also suggested you take a picture of the sled and take down the serial number, make, model and description of the sled so police know what type of sled they are looking for.

Most importantly, Law said if you spot a sled being stolen, don't try to stop it...call police and get a description of the person or persons in the act and try to take a photo.
