NewsAFN National Chief signs NWT aboriginal education document
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The national chief of the Assembly of First Nations has given his seal of approval to an important educational document for the NWT. Shawn Atleo made a stop at the Legislative Assembly Wednesday morning to add his signature to the Aboriginal Student Achievement Education Plan, an initiative to help foster the success of aboriginal students in school. Atleo said he's proud to put his name to a document which has received so much support from aboriginal governments and educators in the territory. "It's so important, I think, to send that signal to our learners, the students, our education leadership, to let them know that they are front and centre." Atleo also said he's hoping the federal government will live up to its promise of supporting educational recommendations made during the summit back in January. "First Nations themselves, wherever they are, for those especially in the North that face such unique circumstances, are the ones that have the solutions for their learners, for the students, especially for the young people." Following the signing, Atleo went to Inuvik to join delegates at the Dene Leadership Meeting. CJCD Mix 100 News Similar StoriesMore Local
