Mayor van Tighem wants answers on city's transit system

Thursday, May 3, 2012 - 4:55 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Would you start taking transit if there was service to Niven Lake, on Sundays or even if there were lower fares?

The City of Yellowknife is putting questions like these to residents in a new transit survey.

Mayor Gord van Tighem said there are questions for transit riders about how people use transit and if there are areas that are being excluded where people would like to see bus service.

“There’s also the side of people who say ‘No, we don’t use transit’ and then there are the questions related to ‘What would motivate you to use transit?’” he said. “That would give us an indicator on how to increase the usage.”

van Tighem says the city would like to see more people taking transit.

“Iqaluit, as an example, the cost got so high that they cancelled their transit service,” he said. “The more people that use it, the less it costs per ride and the more beneficial it is to transportation with a community, the environment within a community.”

Van Tighem says there seems to be some interest in the survey as there have been quite a few responses so far, having only been on-line for less than a week.
