NWT Teachers Assoc., GNWT reach tentative deal

Monday, May 7, 2012 - 4:52 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The NWT Teachers Association and the GNWT have come to terms on a new tentative collective agreement.

Both sides would not release the details of the pending contract, but it will run for four years and if it's ratified, it will take effect on Sept. 1st, just in time for the beginning of the new school year.

Association president David Reid said he's happy a deal is in place, especially considering the current state of the country's economy.

"The economy is where it is and we're happy that the team was able to reach a tentative agreement with the employer."

Both sides are hoping to have the deal ratified by the end of this month and Reid said the association's bargaining team has recommended its approval.

"The recommendation came from the negotiating team to our central executive that it be accepted, and the central executive listened to what the negotiating team said and unanimously endorsed the recommendation moving forward."

Reid says the vote will happen on May 17th and will involve approximately 490 teachers employed by the GNWT, including those teachers in Hay River and at Allain St. Cyr.

Teachers in both Yellowknife school districts are not affected by the deal.
