RCMP Traffic Services has busy weekend on NWT roads

Thursday, May 24, 2012 - 5:09 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The Victoria Day long weekend was a busy one for RCMP Traffic Services in the NWT.

Officers dished out hundreds of tickets for various violations, such as distracted driving, not wearing a seatbelt and impaired driving.

However, Constable Todd Scaplen said the one thing that blew him away was the amount of tickets handed out for speeding.

"Over 100 people were charged with speeding throughout the division, throughout the territory, so that was a bit concerning to me. And we had some speeds in which some people were going upwards of 55, 56 kilometres over the speed limit, which was a bit disheartening to see."

Scaplen said this just proves that people need to be more aware about the responsibility of driving and how it can affect others on the road.

"All we're looking for is for people to be safe when they're out on the roads on the long weekends, or any weekend, or any day for that matter. And just slow down, adhere to the speed limit, and get there in one piece."

Scaplen said he was happy to see no deaths caused by dangerous driving over the course of the weekend.
