Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Weledeh MLA Bob Bromley is leading the charge to have the GNWT bring in a new building act for government buildings.

Bromley pointed out that in every province and the Yukon, new buildings are required to meet energy efficiency standards and must also be 25 per cent better than the national building energy code.

Bromley said in Yellowknife, all GNWT buildings and homes must meet those standards, but there's no such thing outside of Yellowknife.

"While the standards of the National Model Energy Building Code are required, there are no assurances these standards even are being met due to the lack of small community inspection and enforcement systems," he said.

Municipal and Community Affairs minister Robert C. McLeod said his department tries to make sure communities do what they can to make sure they meet standards.

"We ask our communities that are putting up projects to build it with best practices in mind following obviously all the applicable building codes, the national building codes and that. Like I said before it's to the community's benefit if they build buildings that conform to all these regulations and they have good quality product," said McLeod.

McLeod also said the NWT Association of Communities has suggested having building inspectors in all communities.
