NewsYK doctor, CF Major returns from humanitarian mission
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - He normally spends his days as a doctor at Stanton Hospital, but earlier this month Dwayne Coad traded in his scrubs for fatigues for a humanitarian mission in Honduras. Coad is also a captain in the Canadian Forces, and he was part of a small Canadian contingent helping out the U.S. National Guard in Beyond The Horizon 2012. He said they treated between 300 and 1000 patients per day in three small communities, where residents rarely have access to health care. "The main goal was to try to develop readiness training for disaster relief and that sort of thing. So naturally you're going to get a lot of people in one day if there was a natural disaster or whatever type of disaster was going on." Coad said they had to improvise when it came to facilities. "We just used a local school, and then we would rearrange the classroom to make little clinic-type scenarios and triage setups and then they would just bring people in and we would see them." The team collected data on everything they saw to give to the Honduran government so they will be more informed when making decisions on the country's health care. CJCD Mix 100 News More Local
