Yellowknife RCMP Bike Patrol to hit the streets soon for summer
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - A familiar summer sight is returning to Yellowknife for the third year in a row as the RCMP gets set to start up its bike patrol.
The officers on bicycles are able to patrol areas that are inaccessible by cruiser and are able to move faster than those on foot.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Brad Kaeding said they can take a very clandestine approach to crime fighting.
"We're able to sneak up on folks who may be undertaking, or planning on ondertaking, drug transactions," he said. "I know last year, the patrol came upon a sexual assault that was actually in progress and that was very fortunate."
The bikes are expected to be back on the streets within the next week and will continue until September.
Kaeding said they'll be out at all hours.
"Hopefully, the community has the opportunity to see the members out there, both during the day, in the evenings, overnight, weekends, weekdays and in many locations," he said.
The RCMP are training six new officers on the bike patrol this year, in order to increase their flexibility.
