Hay River looking for grants to help fix up arena

Friday, July 27, 2012 - 1:22 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Hay River is looking to begin the process of retro-fitting the town's arena and possibly constructing a brand new one down the road.

The town has applied for a grant from the GNWT to help with their community infrastructure and is looking to make the arena a big ticket location.

Mayor Ken Latour said that the town currently has a plan to help repair the concrete ice slab that desperately needs it.

"We already have a plan in place. We have some money that's identified. So what we're trying to do here is leverage some money out of the Community Infrastructure Fund that was just announced, and get some funding to go towards that."

Latour said the town can only afford to do some of the repairs that need to be done right now.

"We have an arena reserve that we've been putting money into but, you know, we're a long ways away from the 20 or 30 million dollars it's going to take to completely retro-fit that building, or replace it."

Latour said that until the town can save the money to completely retro-fit or build a new arena they will take care of what they can now.
