Changes to elections act mean likely changes to YK voting procedures

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 - 12:42 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - It appears as though everyone likes the idea of an elections by-law for the city of Yellowknife.

The Local Election Authorities Act used to be the letter of the law when it came to holding municipal elections, but now, amendments to the act mean cities, towns and villages can enact their own by-laws.

The amendments came into effect on August 1st and they include 11 things which municipalities can now do under the act, such as have automatic recounts for differences of four or less votes between two candidates, and electronic vote counting.

Councilor Bob Brooks is in favour of enacting a by-law and he said it's going to make life easier for residents.

"The majority of them find ways to make it more convenient for people to actually vote, and I'm all for anything that's going to help increase the participation in the electoral process."

Councilor Cory Vanthuyne had a suggestion on how to help out the city's seniors.

"Either an advanced poll or a polling station that might be able to be situated, say for example, at a community care facility  or a seniors facility."

The proposed by-law will be brought forward to the next city council meeting.
