Students gather at Sir John to sing for Music Monday

Monday, May 7, 2012 - 4:50 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Thousands of students across the country raised their voices in song this week to celebrate Music Monday.

Students in Yellowknife were among those making music.

Kids from various Yellowknife schools gathered in the Sir John Franklin gym to join together in song.

Teacher Sean Daly brought some of his students to the event.

"It's a national proclamation of celebrating music and recognizing the importance of music in public education and in community groups across the nation."

Daly said music education continues to be at risk although not necessarily in Yellowknife.

After coming together in song the different school groups also performed individually at the Yellowknife Music Festival.

"There are always those factors that are something that you have to overcome. Often monetary, but sometimes they're also in the mindset of 'where is the value of music in the entire echelon of the educational system?'."

Nationally the Coalition for Music Education launched the annual initiative in 2005.
