Operation Nanook set to hit the Beaufort Delta region this week

Monday, July 9, 2012 - 1:14 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The Canadian Forces will be back at it in the NWT as the annual exercise known as Operation Nanook gets set to kick off this week.

More than 600 people are expected to fly into Yellowknife and most of them will be on their way to the Beaufort-Delta region, where the exercises will be taking place.

The director of operations at Joint Task Force North, Maj. Mike Gough, said it's going to be an operation which brings together several aspects of government.

“The RCMP, public safety, territorial, municipal governments coming together to respond to public safety and security issues that may happen in the North,” he said.

As for the exercises, Gough wouldn't tip his hand because it's all about the element of surprise, but he did say the first task for those heading up would be getting there.

He also said there is a meeting this week to finalize the conditions of the operation.

“Working with the local community and just making sure that everyone knows what to expect while we’re up there and to address any potential concerns,” he said.

Those taking part are coming from such places as Victoria, Halifax and Ottawa.

The operation officially begins on Tuesday.
