NewsYK seeing high number of scarlet fever casesFriday, January 27, 2012 - 4:18 PM Yellowknife, N.W.T. - In the last two weeks seven cases of scarlet fever have been reported in Yellowknife. In a typical year there are no cases of the infection. Scarlet fever is caused by streptococcal bacteria, the same bacteria that causes strep throat. A communicable disease consultant with the Department of Health and Social Services, Wanda White, said anyone who thinks they may have scarlet fever or strep throat should see their doctor. "So we want people to go in and get checked if they're concerned if they have strep throat, or their children have strep throat. Go to the doctor's, get a swab, and find out what exactly they're dealing with, and if they need antibiotics the doctors will order them." White said the general public can take some simple steps to avoid catching the illness. "It's the kind of thing, like the common cold or flu, that can be spread through close contact, sneezing, that kind of thing, or even just touching other materials that other people will touch. So it's the same thing, stay home if you're sick, wash your hands." Scarlet fever and strep throat can be quickly treated with antibiotics. However, if left untreated scarlet fever can cause liver and kidney damage. CJCD Mix 100 News Similar StoriesMost Viewed Stories
