Giant Mine remediation project team talks potential contract opportunities

Thursday, August 2, 2012 - 2:00 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Remediation of the Giant Mine was the centre of Industry Day yesterday in Yellowknife as the team held a conference to gain both local and national contracting opportunities.

The future of the site was discussed in detail in regards to some of the projects that these contractors will have a chance to be a part of, including the demolition of the roaster.

The mine's acting remediation project manager, Adrian Paradis, explained one of the two parts of the project that the team will be dealing with moving forward.

“We have what’s becoming urgent works with site stabilization plan, specifically with the roaster and the underground,” he said. “I believe part of the session was to talk about what those works were.”

The second part is hiring contractors on an interim basis and Paradis went on to say what exactly the timeline for the project is.

“Approximately 10 years from the active implementation,” he said. “It’s somewhat based on workflows and project scheduling. Some work may be extended beyond but right now, we’re looking at a 10-year horizon.”

In regards to hiring contractors to work on the site, Paradis said it is their intent to try and bring on as many local people as possible.
