City's gardens on display during walking tour

Thursday, August 9, 2012 - 3:18 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The City of Yellowknife and the Yellowknife Homelessness Coalition will be hosting a garden tour this weekend.

The event is in support of BETTY House and will see gardeners from all over the city presenting their work using a variety of garden styles, features and techniques.

According to garden tour committee member, Amanda Mallon, there will be many different unique gardens that can be viewed throughout the weekend.

“We’ve got traditional, sort of formal gardens, with the lawns,” she said. “We’ve got some gardens that specialize in other things. We have one garden that is entered in the city’s contest for rock gardens.”

Mallon said there will be a lot of activities to take part in after the tours as well.

“There will be an informal plant and feed exchange, where people can bring things that have worked for them and learn what we have,” she said. “Hopefully, some experienced gardeners will bring their plants to share. There will also be a tanning and preserve workshop presented by the community garden.”

Mallons says that there will be some new gardening styles on display that could be beneficial for gardeners in the North.
