Premier McLeod visits residents of Nahanni Butte dealing with flood aftermath

Thursday, August 9, 2012 - 4:44 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Premier Bob McLeod is in the Deh Cho this week on a tour of the region with Nahendeh MLA Kevin Menicoche and ministers Dave Ramsay and Glen Abernethy.

Part of the tour included a stop in Nahanni Butte, where McLeod was able to have a look at the damage done by the flooding earlier this June when the Liard River overflowed.

The premier said he can't believe how damaged some of the community's homes and buildings are.

"When you tour some of the facilities and you look at some of the house that have been damaged, I think that damage is worse than I thought would have occurred."

McLeod had a chance to meet with residents of the community and they are venting some of their frustrations about the speed of repairs.

"House that have been identified as suffering flood damage, they wanted to see the repairs being done faster and they want to do a lot the work themselves."

The area has been declared a disaster, meaning federal assistance funding could be made available.
