Discovery Air and Hybrid Air Vehicles deal cancelled

Thursday, August 9, 2012 - 4:54 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - An agreement which would have potentially seen airships fly in the NWT has been scuttled.

Discovery Air has announced a deal between it and Hybrid Air Vehicles out of the United Kingdom has come to an end under terms of the contract.

In a press release, Paul Bouchard, who is president of Discovery Air Innovations, said the project just did not make financial sense to invest in.

Discovery's vice-president of government services, Gary Venman, said it wasn't the sort of deal which would have realized financial success right now.
"We are a public company and we have to put our funds in areas that are going to make return on investment on a reasonable time horizon, and although we expect this technology will be successfully commercialized, it’s going to be beyond a time horizon that were comfortable with."

Venman also said they aren't completely through with the airship technology just yet.

"We owe it to ourselves; we owe it to our investors, our customers, to keep ahead of emerging technologies in transportation."

Under the agreement, Discovery was to purchase 45 airships from the company.
