Alternatives North to host meeting on Giant Mine remediation

Monday, March 5, 2012 - 4:23 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Who should oversee remediation at the Giant Mine?

That is one of the questions that will be up for discussion Tuesday night at a public meeting sponsored by Alternatives North.

Speakers will be highlighting case studies of oversight of similar projects in the US and Canada.

Alternatives North spokesperson Kevin O'Reilly explained the long term goal of the meeting.

“Ultimately, we hope that all of the parties can get together and negotiate an agreement to set up appropriate oversight at the Giant Mine so the community can have greater confidence in what’s going on,” he said.

The remediation plan is currently undergoing an environmental assessment through the Mackenzie Valley Review Board.

The plan calls for the long term storage and maintenance of over 200,000 tonnes of arsenic trioxide dust as well as discusses plans to demolish the buildings and facilities on the surface from the site.
