Holocaust survivor speaks in Yellowknife for first time
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Students from St. Pat's High School are going to experience what no other students in Yellowknife have ever had the chance to do before.
Ben Lesser, a holocaust survivor from Poland, will be speaking today beginning at noon about his life in a concentration camp during the Nazi regime in Germany.
This marks the first time a holocaust survivor has ever spoken in Yellowknife and St. Pat's assistant principal Todd Stewart said this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for the students.
"This kind of thing doesn't happen too often,” said Stewart. “Just the concept of having someone here, especially on the holocaust remembrance day, presenting to our kids, it ranks up there with anything we've ever had."
Stewart also said the students have been preparing for the presentation by watching videos and studying in class.
"We've had at least three or four different war history classes and they have gone on tours of historical war sites and a number of the concentration camps were part of that so they've been prepare," he said.
Because of the subject matter, Stewart said the presentation is geared toward a PG audience, but some grade eight students from Weledeh Catholic School will be invited to join.
