Forum discusses the future of aboriginal tourism

Thursday, April 19, 2012 - 3:44 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The future of aboriginal tourism in the NWT was the topic of discussion in Dettah earlier this week.

The Aboriginal Tourism Advisory Council hosted an aboriginal tourism forum, with several groups and guests on hand to discuss the direction in which the sector should move for the future.

The council's co-chair, Ria Letcher, said the focus of the forum was to come up with a definition of what aboriginal tourism should be.

"Identifying the challenges that plague its development and just tourism development as a whole, and you know, identifying solutions to overcome those challenges."

Letcher said one thing they agreed on was the setting up a one-stop-shop process to make things easier in the long run.

"They can go see this person, and this person will guide them from application process to opening your doors or hosting your first client."

Letcher also said there will be a gathering in the near future to map out a three to five year work plan and set goals for improvement.
