Clothing swap, film night among events planned for YK Earth Week

Friday, April 20, 2012 - 4:24 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Ecology North is celebrating Earth Week in Yellowknife starting on Friday.

The annual event features events like a clothing swap and film nights.

Ecology North's programming coordinator Dawn Tremblay said the event is about celebrating the earth.

"Just to remind everyone and people to think of their relationship with the earth and the different ways they can contribute to making it healthy and happy, or fixing the ways that maybe contribute to making it less healthy and happy."

The event kicked off Friday afternoon with a local fish fry.

Tremblay said the cook out has become an annual event, and she explained why they like to promote local food through the fish fry.

"We are contributing to sustainability which means the emissions from driving food from far away, and we don't necessarily know the farming or butchering practices that are happening in these places that are far away, and at least here we're contributing to a local market."

The week of events wraps up next Saturday with a coffee house and auction at Mildred Hall School.
