DOT announces closure of Dettah, Mackenzie ice roads
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Two key winter ice roads are closing.
The Dettah Ice Road was closed to all traffic as of 3 p.m. Friday afternoon, while the Mackenzie Ice Crossing at Fort Providence will close to low clearance vehicles on Monday.
Department of Transportation spokesperson Earl Blacklock said that means any low lying vehicles like cars and light trucks won't be able to cross.
"The difficulty with the crossing is that as water is on the surface, people wouldn't be able to see those conditions and can bottom out. So we close the crossing to light vehicles to avoid that happening."
Transport vehicles will still be able to cross but Blacklock said in past years the closure for those vehicles has followed days after the closure for light vehicles.
Blacklock added that the fine for driving on closed ice roads is over $800.
"The biggest penalty of course is you may lose your vehicle if it goes through the ice, and you may lose your life, which is the biggest penalty of all of course."
The Tlicho Winter Roads to Wha Ti, Gameti and Wekweti are already closed for the season.
