NewsEnvironment Minister presents water strategy at IPY
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The Environment and Natural Resources Minister is at the International Polar Year Conference in Montreal talking water, climate change and northern research among other things. Michael Miltenberger presented 2010's "Northern Voices, Northern Waters" paper on the territory's water stewardship strategy. "People see it in many southern jurisdictions as basically a ground breaking type of strategy both in its content and how it was developed and now how it’s unfolding as we negotiate our transboundry water agreements, and we set up our community based water monitoring agreements, and all our source water protection plans," said Miltenberger. Miltenberger said the fact that the NWT has a water strategy to begin with puts it ahead of other jurisdictions. "The involvement of the aboriginal governments, the transboundry negotiations, the focus on integrated watershed management and protection of aquatic ecosystems, and the work we are trying to do on community based water monitoring," he said. Miltenberger also met with Canadian universities to discuss research partnerships in the NWT. CJCD Mix 100 News Similar StoriesMore Local
