Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The break-up is over in Hay River and it has been an uneventful one, according to town councillor Kevin Wallington.

Wallington said there were a few factors at the beginning of the year that were cause for concern.

"We had a really close pressure ridge this year and had to do some work to get that knocked down so that we could make sure the water flowed out, but we didn't have a large amount of ice and water coming from down South so that contributed a great deal to the uneventful season this year."

This was the first time the town has taken the step of knocking down the pressure ridge and Wallington said it was a pre-emptive measure.

"We've never seen the pressure ridge that close before and so we didn't want to take any chances. It was just a measure that we felt we needed to take to ensure that we created as safe an environment as possible."

Wallington joked that the only people that got wet during this year's break-up were those that chose to take a polar swim once the ice had cleared.
