YK business owner the target of several break-ins this year

Thursday, May 24, 2012 - 5:12 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The owner of Headgear says a break in over the weekend was just one in a string of robbery incidents his property has experienced over the last five months.

Dan Hayward was called down to the store Sunday after the alarm went off.

"Windows were broken, the door, and they went in. By the time we got here they had already been in and out. Even with an alarm system, by the time the police and everybody gets here it gives them a few minutes to do their thing."

There have been several recent break and enter cases in the capital.

Last week a teen was arrested for a string of home invasions on Latham Island and earlier this month a number of break-ins were reported at Franklin Avenue businesses.

Hayword sees the break and enters as following a pattern, where there with be a rash of them and then they will go away for a while.

"It hasn't changed drastically. I think it's the same kind of a break-in system 20 years ago as there is today."

Yellowknife RCMP have arrested Eric Wardell in relation to the incident.

The 44-year-old Yellowknife man is facing one charge of breaking and entering and committing an indictable offense.
