Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Hay River's soup kitchen is facing some challenges as it works to stay open, including not having enough money for food and an aging board.

One solution to food costs the group wants to pursue is setting up a food rescue program.

Soup kitchen president Laura Rose said being able to set up such a program is going to make a difference for the organization. 

"It's a struggle still but we can keep the bills paid as far as the utilities and all of that basic stuff. It's the cost of the foods, and everybody knows they're going higher and higher in the grocery stores. That makes the hugest difference."

Rose said that although it was supposed to be easier to rescue edible food destined for the dumpster since the territory passed food donor protection legislation, it hasn't happened that way in Hay River.

"We have been getting some outdated things, and we have been getting some crushed packaging and stuff, but it hasn't been as avid. It's just sort of hit and miss on it."

Rose said she is also hoping to install some new board members, as three octogenarian members would like to retire.
