UNW finally installs gate for building tenants

Wednesday, June 20, 2012 - 2:53 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - After months of orders, appeals and decisions, the Union of Northern Workers has finally installed a gate for its tenants, giving them street access to the building.

The gate was installed on June 14th, just one day before the expiration of a stay on an order from the territory's rental officer, Hal Logsdon, to have a gate installed.

Kathryn Carriere is one of the tenants who's been involved in the fight to have a gate installed and she said it's a case of cautious optimism on her part right now.

"We hope we are on the downwards or the end of this year and a half battle, and that everyone will be satisfied with the results in the end."

The gate itself is a temporary one, but Carriere said they have received assurances from the UNW that a permanent one will be built.

She said it's still tough for tenants, though.

"We still can’t have people visit us, so we are still hoping they will fix the original walk way on the other  side, but will take what we can for now and we are happy to have an option."

In a letter to the UNW membership, president Todd Parsons said he hopes this gate will put the concerns about safety to rest.
