Beer Barge Bash looks back on Yellowknife history

Monday, June 25, 2012 - 4:18 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The fourth annual Beer Barge Bash took place this weekend at the Wardair Dock in Old Town.

This event takes a look at the history of Yellowknife while also having a good time with people from across Canada and around the world.

The vice-president of the NWT Mining Heritage Society, Mike Vaydik, is hoping fundraising events like this can help them raise money to put toward a museum at the Giant Mine site to commemorate the city's mining history.

Vaydik said the event is seen as a fun time but also a chance to look back at Yellowknife's History.

"It recreates a part of Yellowknife's history when, inthe 40's and 50's before the highway came, really across the lake was the only way to get the goods in."

Vaydik also said these barges were important to the local community before the construction of the highway.

"Because it brought the first new supplies for the new year and that meant everything from explosives for the mines, every kind of grocery you can imagine."

Around 300 guests were at the bash, including some guest entertainers from Wales.
