NWT Habitat for Humanity project soon to be underway

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Habitat for Humanity NWT is nearing the start of construction of its duplex project in Niven Lake, but there are still a few things left to do.

They're trying and get more volunteers on board and they hope to do that during an open house tomorrow night at the Elks Lodge.

The organization's president, Dave Hurley, said people can sign up online at their website, but they can also do it tomorrow night and there's no limit on how many can sign up.

"We are developing a whole system of how many volunteers we will need in conjunction with the trades and so I can’t tell you for sure .But I think our goal is to make sure that everybody who has volunteered and wants to be part of it will be one way or the other.

One thing volunteers can't work on is the technical aspect, such as electricity and sewage, but Hurley said that's something which is already underway.

"We got the water and sewer service in there and there is something we need to do as we move towards the permitting process and everything else."

He adds the target date for beginning construction is sometime in July and the goal is still to have both families settled in time for Christmas.
