Yellowknife schools rewarded for Drop the Pop campaign

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Certificates and cash awards will be given to seven winning NWT schools from the Drop the Pop Campaign.

Four Yellowknife area schools walked away as winners this year.

The schools earned the awards by producing videos that promote healthy lifestyles and eating.

The assistant principal of the award winning Weledeh Catholic School, Liz Baile, said the students’ commitment is the key.

"They take up their lunch hours and some of their class time to creatively think 'how can we help others understand the bad effects of pop?'."

Baile said it's the way the school presents its message that has allowed it to find success within the school and the Yellowknife community.

"We are very creative in the way that we try and take the message to the students, and to the staff, about healthy eating and the importance of it. And how to be creative and to engage people to really understand that a little bit of junk food does have long term effects."

Weledeh has been named the territorial winner for the last five years.

Other local schools that took home awards were J.H Sissons, William MacDonald and Kaw Tay Whee in Dettah.
