Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Lachlan MacLean is ready to take on one of the most grueling races of his life.

The Yellowknifer left for Scotland to prepare for the Mongol Rally, a 12,000-kilometre charity car rally which begins in England and ends in Mongolia.

His chosen charity is the NWT Literacy Council and he already has more than $13,000 in the pot already.

The council's coordinator of youth and adult services, Katie Randall, said he'll be doing some pre-race training in Scotland before heading out on his voyage.

"It’s actually a right hand steering opposed to the left hand, so he is going to go for ten days to learn how to drive it properly, and then he is actually going to leave England on July 14."

Now that MacLean is on his way, Randall said she's hoping to see people step forward and challenge him on certain things, something people have already done.

"Someone has challenged him $300 to get in and out of Iran safely, someone else challenged him a dollar for every Facebook update so he keeps us up to date on what he is doing and someone has challenged him five dollars for every language he learns a new phrase in."

The rally is expected to take around five to six weeks to complete.
