Yellowknife, N.W.T. - All across the country on July 1, parades were celebrating Canada Day and Hay River had its own celebrations for Canada's 145th birthday.

The town had a great turnout for their community events, especially this year's parade.

A total of 20 floats were on display at this year's celebrations, according to the town's recreation programmer, Emma Harper.

She said this year they tried to have a float to represent all the different cultures that are embraced in Hay River.

"We really tried to focus this year on various cultures which make up Hay River," she said. "We had float entries from the Katlodeeche First Nation, Metis, the Filipino community. We had flag bearers from the Francophone community as well."

Harper also said the 20 floats they had this year was actually less than the previous year's parade.

"That's because they had the jetboat races in Hay River and a lot of the jetboats entered the parade," she said. "The year before, I'm not sure, but I believe it was up a little bit from then."

Canada Day is one of the biggest celebrations the town puts on, with around 500 people coming out to enjoy themselves on the day.
