Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The city of Yellowknife is looking at a program to help show public art that can mark different areas of town, serving a useful purpose for the residents.

The Place Marker Program would be used for things within the city, such as bike racks.

This program can already be seen in places like Saskatoon.

Councillor Paul Falvo said it's a great idea because of the recent demand for more bike racks in the city and this would make them look much more appealing.

"Street art that could also be useful, it could also be a bike rack. We've had a number of calls from residents looking for more bike racks. I've been trying to think of ways to make them more attractive."

Councillor Bob Brooks said there are other options that the city can apply this art to.

"What the city of Saskatoon did, in order to get more little node parks, bicycle racks, also local artists, they would do some sort of themes on their electrical boxes."

This would be a project that the city and local sponsors would be able to contribute funds towards.
