NewsDene National Chief Bill Erasmus wants to see changes made to the AFN
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - By the end of this week the new Assembly of First Nations, National Chief will be named. The debates took place last week; candidates had their opportunity to spread their message one last time. Dene National Chief Bill Erasmus is in the running for AFN National Chief, and he wants to keep his current position within the Dene Nation. Erasmus said he would like to see some changes made to the AFN in the way that it operates, especially when it comes to the voting system "All of the chiefs in Canada don’t get a right to vote, Eddie Erasmus from the Tlicho, who runs his own government, who runs 39,000 square kilometers of land with legislative authority including taxing powers, cannot go to the AFN meeting next week and speak." Erasmus said he believes that being a regional chief will give him an upper hand come election time. "I have seen what works and what doesn’t work, I think the advantage here is that it doesn’t have to be a long transition. I’ve been living it and I’ve been working at it." Erasmus hopes the election process doesn't run to long and that the final results will be in by the end of Thursday.
