NewsStanton emergency room doctor set to take over as Canadian Medical Association presidentFriday, August 3, 2012 - 1:42 PM Yellowknife, N.W.T. - A piece of history will be made in the NWT's medical world later this month. Stanton Hospital emergency room physician Dr. Anna Reid will be the first representative of the NWT to be named the president of the Canadian Medical Association. Reid said that this is a great honour for her and that there are a few things that she will hope to address in her new position. “One of the biggest things I’m interested in is what we’re talking about a lot now at the CMA and that’s the issue of health equity,” she said. “We’re looking at the social determinants of health and it looks at those things that traditionally lie outside the health care sector, but actually are the biggest influences of health care.” Reid believes that being from the NWT will help her to be able to draw more attention to the medical concerns of the territory. “It has a huge meaning for this part of the North and for the Arctic to actually have someone representing the concerns we have here,” she said. Reid is the first president from the North since Dr. Allen Reddick from the Yukon held the position. Her term begins on August 12 when she will be introduced as the new president at the CMA’s annual general meeting in Yellowknife.
